Change Your Maryland Driver's License Address Guide

Understanding Maryland Driver's License Address Changes

Your Maryland driver's license contains important personal information, including your current address. When you move to a new home, Maryland law requires you to update your address with the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) within a specific timeframe. This guide explains the process and requirements for changing your driver's license address in Maryland.

Maryland residents must update their driver's license address within 60 days of moving. This requirement applies whether you move within Maryland or relocate from another state. The address on your driver's license serves multiple purposes: it helps law enforcement identify you, it's used by insurance companies, and it ensures you receive important correspondence from the MVA about license renewals or violations.

The address change process is straightforward and can be completed in several ways depending on your situation. You don't need to take a new photograph or retake the written test unless your license is expiring within 60 days. If your license is set to expire soon, the MVA will issue you a new license with the updated address rather than just changing the information on your current card.

Understanding the different methods available to you—whether in-person, by mail, or online—helps you choose the option that fits your schedule and circumstances best. Each method has specific requirements and processing times that vary based on your situation.

Practical Takeaway: Mark your move date on a calendar and plan to update your address within 60 days. Knowing which method works best for you before you move can help you complete the update without delays.

In-Person Address Change at MVA Offices

Visiting a Maryland MVA office remains the most common way to change your driver's license address. The MVA operates multiple service centers throughout the state, located in Baltimore, Silver Spring, Glen Burnie, and other regions. You can find the complete list of office locations and current hours on the official MVA website.

When you visit an MVA office for an address change, bring your current driver's license and proof of your new address. Acceptable forms of address proof include utility bills (electric, gas, water), a lease or mortgage document, a property tax bill, a bank or credit card statement, insurance policies, or government mail showing your new address. The document should be dated within the last 60 days and show your name and complete address.

The process at an MVA office typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on how busy the location is. When you arrive, you'll check in and receive a ticket with a number. You'll then wait to be called to a service window where an MVA representative will verify your identity, confirm your new address, and update the records. They may ask you questions to confirm personal information on file.

Most MVA offices operate Monday through Friday during business hours, with some locations offering limited Saturday hours. Processing times vary by location and time of day. Visiting during off-peak hours—typically mid-morning on weekdays or early in the week—often means shorter wait times. Some offices now use online appointment scheduling systems that allow you to reserve a specific time slot, reducing wait times significantly.

One important note: if your new address takes you to a different county in Maryland, your license may be issued at a different MVA regional office. However, this doesn't affect the address change process—you can still complete it at any MVA location.

Practical Takeaway: Schedule an appointment if your local MVA office offers online booking. Bring your current license and a utility bill or recent document showing your new address to speed up the process.

Mail-In Address Change Options

Maryland residents who prefer not to visit an MVA office can request an address change by mail. This method works well if you live far from an MVA office, have limited mobility, or prefer handling the change without leaving your home. The mail process takes longer than in-person service, typically requiring 2 to 3 weeks for processing and delivery.

To change your address by mail, you need to send the MVA a completed form along with proof of your new address. The official form is the "Notice of Address Change" form, which you can obtain by downloading it from the Maryland MVA website or requesting one by calling the MVA customer service line. You'll also need to include a photocopy (not the original) of a document proving your new address, such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or property tax statement.

Along with the form and address proof, you should include a copy of your driver's license (both sides). Mail everything to the address provided on the MVA website for address change requests. Use first-class mail or a tracking service so you can confirm delivery. The MVA recommends keeping copies of everything you send for your records.

When the MVA receives your request, they will verify the information and update their records. If your license is expiring within 60 days of your address change, the MVA will issue you a new license and mail it to your new address. If your license has more than 60 days remaining, the MVA will mail you a duplicate license with the updated address. In some cases, the MVA may contact you if they need clarification about your new address.

The mail-in method works best if you're not in a rush to receive an updated license and if you have access to a copier and can mail documents. Keep in mind that during busy periods—such as holiday times or when many people are relocating—processing times may be longer than usual.

Practical Takeaway: Use certified mail or a tracking service when sending your address change request by mail. Keep copies of the form, address proof, and license copy you send for your records until you receive your updated license.

Online Address Change Through Maryland MVA

Maryland offers an online address change option for residents with valid Maryland driver's licenses. This is often the quickest method available. The online system allows you to update your address without visiting an office or mailing documents. The process takes just a few minutes and provides confirmation immediately upon completion.

To change your address online, visit the official Maryland MVA website and locate the online services section. You'll need to enter specific information from your current driver's license, including your license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. These details verify your identity and prevent unauthorized changes to your account.

The online system will ask you to confirm your current address as it appears on your license, then enter your new address. You must provide your complete street address, city, and ZIP code. The system may verify your address against postal databases to confirm it's valid. After entering your new address, you'll review the information for accuracy before submitting.

Once submitted, the online system provides confirmation that your request was received. Processing typically takes 7 to 10 business days. The MVA will mail your updated license to your new address. If your license will expire within 60 days, the system will issue you a replacement license instead of just changing the address on your existing card.

One limitation of the online method is that it may not be available if your license has been marked with certain flags or restrictions in the MVA system. Additionally, if you need to update your address and change other information simultaneously, you may need to visit an office in person or use the mail option instead.

The Maryland MVA website contains detailed instructions about the online address change process and troubleshooting steps if you encounter problems. You can also call their customer service line if you have questions before beginning the online process.

Practical Takeaway: Try the online method first if you have your current license information available. It's usually the quickest option and requires no documents or travel. Keep your confirmation number if provided.

What Happens After You Change Your Address

After you submit your address change request through any method, the Maryland MVA will process your information and mail an updated license to your new address. Understanding what to expect during this waiting period helps you know whether to take additional steps, such as updating your address with other organizations.

Processing times vary based on the method you used. In-person changes are usually reflected in the system immediately, though your physical license card will still be mailed to you. Mail-in requests typically process within 10 to 15 business days after arrival. Online requests process within 7 to 10 business days. During peak periods or holidays, processing may take longer.

Your new license will be mailed to the address you provided. Make sure someone will be home to receive mail, or ask a trusted person to collect packages on
