Free Guide to Changing Your Hotmail Password

Understanding Your Hotmail Account Security

Your Hotmail account contains personal information that needs protection. Microsoft owns Hotmail and uses it as part of their Outlook email service. When you create a Hotmail account, you establish an online identity that connects to various Microsoft services including OneDrive, Office 365, and Windows devices.

Your password is the primary tool that protects this account. A strong password prevents unauthorized people from reading your emails, accessing your files, or using your account to contact your friends and family. According to Microsoft's security reports, weak passwords remain one of the most common reasons people experience account breaches. When someone gains access to your email account, they can reset passwords for other accounts linked to that email address, including banking and social media accounts.

Changing your password regularly is a recommended practice in information security. Many organizations suggest changing passwords every 60 to 90 days, though this varies by individual risk level and circumstances. If you suspect someone has accessed your account, use your device's keyboard to type your new password rather than copying and pasting it, as this prevents some malware from capturing it.

Your password should contain a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Hotmail requires passwords to be at least 8 characters long. The combination of different character types makes your password harder to guess through automated attempts. Avoid using information that's publicly available about you, such as birthdays, pet names, or addresses that appear on social media.

Practical takeaway: Before changing your password, decide on a new one that combines uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Write it somewhere safe or use a password manager to store it securely. Plan to change your Hotmail password at least once every three months.

Step-by-Step Process for Changing Your Password on a Computer

Changing your Hotmail password on a desktop or laptop computer follows a straightforward process through Microsoft's account settings. First, open any web browser and navigate to the Hotmail website by typing www.hotmail.com in the address bar. Sign in using your current email address and password when prompted.

Once you're signed in, look for your account icon, which typically appears as a circle in the top right corner of the screen. Click on this icon to open a dropdown menu. From this menu, select "View account" or "Manage your Microsoft account." This takes you to your account dashboard where you can control various settings related to your email and other Microsoft services.

On your account dashboard, locate the "Security" section on the left side menu. Click on "Security" to access password and sign-in options. Within the Security section, you'll see "Change password" as one of the available options. Click on this option to begin the password change process.

Microsoft will ask you to confirm your identity before allowing you to change your password. This might involve entering your current password again or confirming a verification code sent to your phone number or backup email address. This verification step protects your account by ensuring that the person making changes is actually you.

After verification, you'll see a form with two fields. The first field asks for your current password. Type this carefully. The second field asks for your new password. Enter your new password in this field, then re-enter it in a third field labeled "Confirm password." These confirmation fields help prevent typos that would lock you out of your account. Once you've entered your new password twice, click the "Next" or "Save" button to complete the change.

Practical takeaway: Set aside 5 to 10 minutes to change your password without distractions. Have your new password written down or memorized before you begin. After you complete the change, sign out and then sign back in with your new password to confirm it's working.

Changing Your Password on Mobile Devices

Many people check their Hotmail accounts on smartphones and tablets. Microsoft provides the Outlook mobile app for both iPhone and Android devices, which is the primary way to access Hotmail on phones. You can change your password directly through this app, though the process differs slightly from the computer version.

On an iPhone, open the Outlook app and tap the settings icon, which looks like a gear symbol. Scroll down and select "Account Settings." Then tap your email address to access your account options. Look for "Change Password" within these settings. The app will direct you through verification steps and the password change form. On Android devices, the process is similar: open the Outlook app, tap the menu icon (usually three horizontal lines), select "Settings," choose your account, and find the password change option.

Alternatively, you can change your password through any web browser on your mobile device by visiting www.hotmail.com. This process mirrors the computer version described in the previous section. Open your browser, visit the Hotmail website, sign in, access your account settings, navigate to the Security section, and select "Change Password." The screens may appear smaller on your phone, but the steps remain the same.

When typing your password on a mobile device, pay close attention to whether the device's automatic capitalization is active. On iPhones, the first letter of passwords is often automatically capitalized unless you've turned off this feature. This can cause your new password to be different than what you intended. Many users find it helpful to turn off auto-capitalization temporarily when entering passwords by tapping the shift key before typing begins.

Mobile devices may ask you to sign out of the Outlook app after changing your password. This is normal. You'll need to sign back in using your new password. Some devices cache your login information, so forcing a sign-out ensures the old password isn't stored on your phone anymore. After signing back in, your account will work normally on your mobile device.

Practical takeaway: If you primarily use Hotmail on your phone, test your new password on the mobile app immediately after changing it. If you use multiple devices—phone, tablet, and computer—you'll need to sign in again on each device with your new password.

Recovering Your Account if You Forget Your New Password

Password changes sometimes go wrong. You might forget the new password you just created, mistype it during setup, or lose track of which version is current if you changed it multiple times. Microsoft provides recovery options for these situations, though recovering your account takes more effort than simply changing your password.

If you forget your password immediately after changing it, try accessing your Hotmail account on the login page by entering your email address and selecting "Can't access your account?" This option appears below the password field. Microsoft will guide you through account recovery steps. The system typically asks you to verify your identity using information associated with your account, such as a phone number or backup email address.

To set up recovery options before you need them, return to your Security settings and add a phone number and backup email address to your account. This provides multiple ways to prove you own the account if something goes wrong. When you attempt to recover your account, Microsoft may send a verification code to either of these recovery contacts. You'll enter this code to prove your identity and regain access.

The recovery process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending on which verification method you use. Phone verification is typically faster than email verification. Microsoft may ask security questions about your account history or recent activity to further confirm your identity. Answer these questions as accurately as you remember them.

Once you've verified your identity through recovery, you'll be able to set a new password. Treat this as an opportunity to create a password that's both secure and memorable. Write it down in a safe location, or store it in a password manager application. Password managers like LastPass, Dashlane, or Microsoft's built-in password manager in Windows and Edge help you remember complex passwords without writing them down.

Practical takeaway: Set up recovery contacts now before you need them. Add a phone number and backup email to your account. When you create your new password, type it in a text file and read it aloud to yourself three times to help memorize it, then delete the file.

Protecting Your New Password After Changing It

Creating a strong new password is only part of account security. How you manage and protect that password after you've created it matters just as much. Once you've changed your password, take steps to ensure it remains secure and that you don't lose access to it.
