Understanding the Basics of Bullet Journaling

Bullet journaling is a note-taking and organizational method created by Ryder Carroll in 2013. Unlike traditional journals with full paragraphs or pre-formatted planners, bullet journaling uses a flexible system of bullets, dashes, and symbols to organize information quickly. The core idea is to combine elements of a planner, diary, and to-do list into one customizable notebook.

The method starts with a simple dot grid notebook—though any notebook works. Users create their own layouts and systems rather than following a predetermined format. This flexibility means the system adapts to your life, not the other way around. The basic components include an index (a table of contents), future logs (planning months ahead), monthly spreads (organizing the current month), and daily logs (tracking individual days).

According to a 2022 survey by the Stationary Office, approximately 28% of people who journal use some form of bullet journaling or hybrid system. The popularity has grown significantly since 2013, with millions of people sharing their journals on social media platforms. This widespread adoption shows the method's appeal across different ages, professions, and lifestyles.

The beauty of bullet journaling lies in its minimalist foundation combined with room for personalization. Some people keep their journals simple with just text and basic symbols. Others incorporate watercolors, calligraphy, stickers, and elaborate designs. Both approaches are valid—there's no "correct" way to maintain a bullet journal.

Practical Takeaway: Start by understanding that bullet journaling is fundamentally a personal organizational system. You don't need artistic skills, expensive supplies, or a specific notebook type. The method works because it's adaptable to your unique needs and preferences.

Choosing the Right Notebook and Supplies

Selecting a notebook is one of the first decisions new bullet journalists face. The original Bullet Journal Method recommends a dot grid notebook because dots provide subtle guidance without the rigidity of graph paper or ruled lines. Dot grid notebooks offer flexibility—you can write in straight lines, create tables, draw diagrams, or design elaborate spreads without predetermined formatting.

Popular notebook options include the Leuchtturm1917 (approximately $15-20), Rhodia DotPad (around $8-12), and Moleskine Cahier (roughly $10-15). However, budget-friendly alternatives work equally well. Many people start with inexpensive composition notebooks from office supply stores, costing $2-4. As you develop your preferences, you may upgrade to higher-quality paper that handles various writing instruments better.

Paper quality matters if you plan to use markers, highlighters, or watercolors. Thicker paper (around 100gsm or higher) prevents ink from bleeding through. If you're using only pens, standard notebook paper performs adequately. Size considerations include A5 (half of standard letter size, approximately 5.8 x 8.3 inches), which is portable but offers less space, and A4 (standard letter size, approximately 8.3 x 11.7 inches), which provides more room for detailed layouts.

Essential supplies include black pens for writing and creating bullets, and that's genuinely all you need to start. Optional supplies that many people add over time include:

• Ruler or straightedge for drawing neat lines and boxes
• Highlighters or colored pencils for visual organization
• Washi tape for adding visual interest without permanent marks
• Fine-tip markers for headers and titles
• Correction tape for fixing mistakes
• Index tabs for quick navigation between sections

A common mistake beginners make is purchasing excessive supplies before understanding their actual needs. Many people spend $50-100 on supplies, then discover they prefer a minimalist approach. Start with a notebook and a pen. Add supplies only after identifying genuine needs.

Practical Takeaway: Purchase a dot grid notebook under $15 and use a standard black pen you already own. This minimal investment lets you discover whether bullet journaling suits your organizational style before spending more money on supplies.

Setting Up Your Index and Key

The index serves as your bullet journal's table of contents. Reserve the first 2-4 pages of your notebook for the index, leaving it incomplete initially. As you create spreads throughout the notebook, add them to the index with their page numbers. This system lets you locate specific months, projects, or information without flipping through every page.

Your index might include entries like "January 2024 (page 5)," "Project Planning (page 18)," "Book Notes (page 32)," and "Fitness Goals (page 47)." Some people organize the index chronologically, while others arrange it by category. Choose whatever method you'll actually use when searching for information.

The key is a legend explaining the symbols you use in your journal. Standard Bullet Journal symbols include:

• A dot (•) for a regular task or note
• A dash (-) for a note or reminder
• An asterisk (*) for an event or appointment
• An exclamation mark (!) for an important item
• An empty circle (○) for incomplete tasks
• A crossed-out circle (◐) for a migrated task (moved to another date)
• An angle bracket (>) for a task moved to a future date
• An angle bracket pointing left (<) for a task moved to a previous date

You can modify this key to match your preferences. Some people add custom symbols for recurring tasks, like a heart for self-care activities or a camera for photo opportunities. The key should fit on one page and appear in your front matter (the opening pages) for easy reference.

Creating your key early establishes consistency throughout your journal. When you develop this habit, you'll immediately recognize what each symbol means without thinking. This efficiency becomes valuable as you build your system and review previous entries.

Practical Takeaway: Design your index and key on the first pages of your notebook before creating other spreads. This 10-minute task sets a foundation for organization and makes future navigation significantly faster.

Creating Future Logs, Monthly Spreads, and Daily Pages

The future log is where you record events and tasks months in advance. The most common format uses six months per two-page spread. On the left page, write three month names as headers. Under each month, list the date and event or task. This layout provides enough space for major items without becoming cluttered. A future log might include vacation dates, birthdays, project deadlines, and recurring appointments.

Monthly spreads organize the current month in detail. A simple monthly spread includes a calendar grid with space for notes beside or below each date. On a two-page spread, the left page typically shows the calendar, while the right page lists tasks, goals, and events for that month. Some people create elaborate calendars with watercolors and decorative elements; others use minimal designs with just the date numbers and spaces for notes.

Daily pages—also called daily logs—record the specific day's tasks, notes, and events. The most basic format lists the day and date as a header, then uses your bullet system to record items throughout the day. You might write tasks as you think of them, adding and checking them off as you progress. A daily page created on the morning of March 15 might look like this:

• Tuesday, March 15
• • Email the client about the proposal
• • Grocery shopping: milk, bread, eggs
• * Dentist appointment at 2 PM
• - Call Mom before dinner

Many people find that creating daily pages each morning or evening keeps them connected to their organization system. Others create weekly spreads that bridge the gap between monthly planning and daily detail, organizing one week's tasks and events on a two-page spread.

The timing of creating these spreads varies by person. Some people prepare monthly spreads on the first of each month, spending 15-30 minutes on the layout. Others create them gradually throughout the month. Daily pages typically take 5
