Overview of Swickard Auto Group's Business Model

Swickard Auto Group operates as a network of independently owned and operated automotive dealerships across multiple states. The Swickard family has been involved in the automotive business for decades, building a reputation in the markets they serve. Each dealership location operates under specific franchise agreements with vehicle manufacturers, which means they are authorized to sell particular brands like Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, and others depending on the location. These franchise agreements establish guidelines for how vehicles are sold, serviced, and represented to customers.

The dealership group generates revenue through several channels. The primary revenue source comes from vehicle sales—both new cars and pre-owned inventory. When you purchase a vehicle, the dealership makes a profit on the sale price. Beyond vehicle sales, dealerships also operate service departments where customers can get maintenance, repairs, and warranty work completed. Service departments represent a significant portion of dealership revenue and are often where long-term customer relationships develop.

Finance and insurance products form another revenue stream. When customers finance a vehicle through the dealership, the dealership works with lenders and may earn money through financing arrangements. Additionally, dealerships offer various insurance and protection products like extended warranties, gap insurance, and maintenance plans.

Practical Takeaway: Swickard Auto Group dealerships make money from vehicle sales, service work, and financial products. Knowing this helps you understand pricing structures and why dealerships may recommend certain services or products during your visit.

The Vehicle Inventory and Selection Process

Swickard Auto Group dealerships maintain both new and used vehicle inventories. New vehicle inventory consists of current model year vehicles ordered from manufacturers based on market demand and customer interest. Used vehicle inventory includes trade-ins, lease returns, and vehicles purchased from auctions or other sources. The mix of inventory varies by location and the specific brands each dealership represents.

New vehicles come directly from the manufacturer and arrive at dealerships with full manufacturer warranties. These vehicles range from economy models to luxury options depending on the brand. Dealership inventory managers work to stock vehicles that match local market preferences. For example, a dealership in a rural area might stock more trucks and SUVs, while an urban location might emphasize sedans and compact vehicles.

Used vehicles undergo different processes depending on their source. Trade-in vehicles are typically inspected by dealership technicians who assess their condition and determine value. Lease returns come with documented service records and known history. Auction-purchased vehicles are inspected before being added to the lot. Most Swickard locations provide vehicle history reports from services like Carfax or AutoCheck, which show previous ownership, accident history, and service records.

When browsing inventory, you can typically view available vehicles on the dealership's website, which displays photos, pricing, features, and detailed specifications. Inventory changes regularly as new vehicles arrive and others sell. Many dealerships allow you to search for specific makes, models, colors, and price ranges online before visiting in person. Some locations offer vehicle locator services where staff can search other dealerships in the group if a particular vehicle isn't immediately available at your preferred location.

Practical Takeaway: Check the dealership's website to review available inventory before visiting. This lets you identify specific vehicles of interest and understand current pricing, saving time during your visit.

The Sales Process and What Happens at the Dealership

When you visit a Swickard Auto Group dealership to purchase a vehicle, you'll encounter a structured sales process designed to move from initial interest through closing. Understanding this process helps you know what to expect and prepares you to make informed decisions. The typical process involves meeting with a sales representative, test driving vehicles, negotiating price, and completing paperwork.

Upon arrival, a sales associate will typically greet you and ask about your interests—whether you're looking for a specific vehicle, exploring options, or trading in your current car. If you've researched vehicles online beforehand, let them know what you've seen so they can direct you to those specific models. Sales associates can answer questions about features, specifications, fuel economy, and pricing. They can also explain differences between trim levels and optional packages.

Test drives are a standard part of the process. You'll typically drive the vehicle with a sales associate present, though some dealerships may allow you to test drive alone after establishing basic information. Test drives usually last 20 to 30 minutes and cover various road conditions so you can evaluate the vehicle's handling, comfort, acceleration, and braking. Always request a test drive for any vehicle you're seriously considering—this gives you firsthand experience with how the vehicle operates.

Pricing and negotiations come after you've identified a vehicle you like. The asking price shown online or on the window sticker is a starting point, not necessarily the final price. Factors affecting the final price include the vehicle's actual condition, market demand, your trade-in value (if applicable), and the dealership's current sales goals. It's common to negotiate back and forth on price. Be prepared to discuss what you think is fair based on the vehicle's condition, mileage, and market value. Tools like Kelley Blue Book and NADA Guides provide market value information that can inform your negotiations.

Once you agree on a price, you'll move to the business office to complete paperwork and financing. The dealership's finance and insurance manager will present options for how to pay—cash, traditional financing, or lease. If financing, they'll discuss interest rates, loan terms, and monthly payments. This is also where dealerships present additional products like extended warranties, gap insurance, and maintenance plans. Take time to understand each option before committing.

Practical Takeaway: Research vehicle values before visiting, participate actively in test drives, and don't feel pressured to make quick decisions. The sales process involves multiple stages, and you have the right to take time considering each step.

Financing Options and How Payments Work

Swickard Auto Group dealerships offer multiple pathways to finance or purchase vehicles. Understanding these options helps you choose an approach that fits your financial situation. The main options include paying cash, financing through the dealership, or leasing a vehicle. Each option has different costs, terms, and outcomes.

Cash purchases are straightforward—you pay the full vehicle price upfront and own the car outright immediately. This eliminates interest charges and monthly payments but requires having the full purchase amount available. Dealerships typically don't offer discounts for cash purchases, as they benefit financially from arranging financing.

Dealership financing is common and convenient. The dealership arranges a loan through a lending partner, and you repay the loan over a set period, typically 36 to 72 months. Your monthly payment depends on the loan amount, interest rate, and loan term. Interest rates vary based on several factors including your credit score, down payment amount, loan term, and current market rates. Better credit scores generally qualify for lower interest rates. A larger down payment reduces the amount you need to borrow, which lowers your monthly payment and total interest paid. It's worth getting pre-approved financing from your own bank or credit union to compare rates before dealership negotiations begin.

Leasing is another option where you pay to use a vehicle for a set period, typically two to four years. Monthly lease payments are generally lower than loan payments for purchasing the same vehicle, but you build no equity and must return the vehicle at lease end. Lease agreements include mileage limits—typically 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year—and you're responsible for excess mileage charges and any damage beyond normal wear.

The dealership's finance manager will present various loan terms and rates during the business office visit. You can negotiate the interest rate and terms, though your credit profile significantly influences what rates are available. Gap insurance is often presented during financing—this covers the difference between what you owe on a loan and the vehicle's actual cash value if it's totaled in an accident. Extended warranties and maintenance plans protect against future repair costs, though these add to your monthly payment or upfront cost.

Practical Takeaway: Compare financing options by researching rates from your own financial institutions before visiting the dealership. Know your credit score, consider your down payment amount, and calculate what monthly payment you can comfortably afford.
