How to Connect Aftershokz Bone Conduction Headphones Guide

Understanding Aftershokz Bone Conduction Technology

Aftershokz, now known as Shokz, manufactures bone conduction headphones that work differently from traditional earbuds or over-ear headphones. Instead of sending sound through the ear canal, these devices vibrate against your skin—typically on the bone just behind your ear—to transmit audio directly to your inner ear. This technology has been in development since the early 2000s, with Shokz founding in 2012 and growing to serve millions of users worldwide.

Bone conduction technology relies on your skull's natural ability to conduct vibrations. When the transducers on the headphones vibrate at specific frequencies, these vibrations travel through your mastoid bone (the bone behind your ear) directly to your cochlea, the part of your inner ear responsible for hearing. This bypasses the traditional pathway of sound traveling through air into your ear canal. The result is that you can hear audio while keeping your ear canal completely open, allowing you to remain aware of your surroundings—a feature particularly useful while running, cycling, or driving.

The main models you might encounter include the OpenMove, OpenFit, and Arc series. The OpenMove represents an entry-level option, while the OpenFit and Arc models offer enhanced features like improved battery life, water resistance, and better audio quality. Most Shokz headphones are wireless and connect via Bluetooth, making them compatible with smartphones, tablets, and computers that support Bluetooth connectivity.

Practical takeaway: Before connecting your headphones, identify which Shokz model you own by checking the device itself or your product documentation. Different models may have slightly different connection procedures, though the basic Bluetooth pairing process remains consistent across most Shokz devices.

Preparing Your Shokz Headphones for First-Time Connection

Before you can connect your Aftershokz bone conduction headphones to any device, you need to prepare them properly. Most Shokz headphones ship with a partial charge, but it's recommended to fully charge them before your first connection attempt. This ensures the battery has sufficient power for the pairing process and helps establish a stable connection. Use the magnetic charging cable that comes in your box, typically a USB connector on one end and two magnetic contact points on the other.

Charging usually takes between 1-2 hours depending on the model. During charging, you may see an LED indicator light on the headphones—often red or amber when charging, changing to blue or green when fully charged. Consult your model's manual for specific color meanings. While charging, review your Shokz headphones' manual or visit the Shokz website to familiarize yourself with the button layout and controls. Most models have a multifunction button, power button, and possibly volume controls.

Check that your device—whether it's a smartphone, tablet, or computer—has Bluetooth enabled and is fully powered on. Ensure your phone or computer has current software, as older operating systems may have compatibility issues with newer Bluetooth devices. You should also make sure you're in a location with minimal interference, away from other Bluetooth devices that might compete for connection priority. Removing other wireless headphones from the area or temporarily disabling Bluetooth on nearby devices can help.

Clear any existing Bluetooth pairings on your Shokz headphones if this isn't your first time using them with a new device. Most models allow you to reset the Bluetooth pairing memory by holding the multifunction button for 10-15 seconds until you hear a specific audio cue or see an LED flash in a particular pattern. Your product manual will specify the exact reset procedure for your model.

Practical takeaway: Spend 15-20 minutes preparing both your headphones and your receiving device. A fully charged headset, enabled Bluetooth, and cleared previous pairings solve the majority of connection problems before they start.

Step-by-Step Bluetooth Pairing Process

The Bluetooth pairing process for Shokz headphones follows a standard sequence that works for most models, though specific button combinations may vary. Start by powering on your Shokz headphones. Depending on your model, you may hear a voice prompt or see LED lights indicating the device is on. Some models require you to press and hold the power button for several seconds until you hear "Power on" or see a flashing blue LED.

Once powered on, put the headphones into pairing mode. For most Shokz models, this involves pressing and holding the multifunction button (often the larger center button) for about 5-10 seconds. You should hear an audio cue like a beep or voice announcement saying "Pairing" or "Pairing mode." The LED indicator typically flashes in a specific pattern—often alternating blue and red—to confirm you're in pairing mode. This mode usually remains active for about 5 minutes, giving you a window to complete the connection with your device.

On your Bluetooth-enabled device, open the Bluetooth settings. On iPhones and iPads, go to Settings, then Bluetooth, and toggle it on if it isn't already. On Android devices, access Settings, then Bluetooth, and ensure it's toggled on. On Windows computers, go to Settings, then Devices, then Bluetooth & other devices. On Mac computers, click the Apple menu, select System Preferences, then Bluetooth. Your device should scan for available Bluetooth peripherals and display a list of nearby devices.

Look for your Shokz headphones in the available devices list. Newer models typically appear with their specific model name, such as "Shokz OpenFit" or "Shokz Arc." Older models or the original Aftershokz branding might appear differently. Tap or click on your headphones' name to initiate pairing. Your device may prompt you to confirm the pairing or enter a PIN code. Most Shokz headphones don't require a PIN and pair automatically once selected, but check your manual if a code is requested. The default PIN for most Shokz devices is 0000.

Once successfully paired, you should hear a confirmation tone from the headphones, and the LED should stop flashing and remain steady or turn off. Your device will display the headphones as "Connected" in the Bluetooth settings menu. Test the connection by playing audio through your device—you should hear sound transmitted through the bone conduction transducers.

Practical takeaway: Write down the exact button sequence for your specific model (found in your manual) and keep it accessible. This reference prevents confusion if you need to reconnect later or troubleshoot pairing issues.

Connecting to Multiple Devices and Switching Between Them

Shokz headphones can pair with multiple devices simultaneously, which is useful if you own a smartphone, tablet, and computer. However, the headphones typically maintain an active connection with only one device at a time. Understanding how to manage multiple pairings and switch between devices improves your user experience significantly.

When you pair your Shokz headphones with a second device, follow the same pairing process described earlier. Put the headphones into pairing mode, search for them on your new device, and select them to pair. Once both devices are paired, the headphones will remember both connections. When both devices have Bluetooth enabled, the headphones typically connect to whichever device was most recently used or attempted connection first.

To switch between devices, you can manually disable Bluetooth on the device you're leaving and enable it on the device you want to use. Alternatively, some Shokz models include a voice command or button sequence to manually switch connections. Check your model's manual for a "switch" or "connect to paired device" function. For example, some models allow you to double-tap the multifunction button to cycle through paired devices.

If your headphones consistently connect to the wrong device, you may need to remove the unwanted pairing from that device and re-pair it. On most smartphones and computers, you can go into Bluetooth settings, find the headphones in your paired devices list, and select "Forget," "Unpair," or "Remove." You can always pair that device again later. This approach forces the headphones to prioritize connection to your preferred device.

Some users experience delays when switching between devices, particularly if Bluetooth is enabled on both simultaneously. Turning off Bluetooth on your previous device before switching to a new one typically results in faster, more reliable connections. If you frequently use the same two devices, you might also consider disabling Bluetooth on less frequently used devices to reduce connection confusion.
