How to Delete iCloud Backups From Your Device

Understanding iCloud Backups and Why You Might Want to Delete Them

iCloud is Apple's cloud storage service that automatically saves your device data, including photos, contacts, messages, app data, and device settings. When you back up your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to iCloud, you're creating a copy of your information stored on Apple's servers. This backup helps protect your data in case your device breaks, gets lost, or needs to be replaced.

However, iCloud storage isn't unlimited. Apple provides 5GB of free storage to each user, which fills up fairly quickly if you're regularly backing up devices with large amounts of photos or videos. Once your storage is full, iCloud stops creating new backups until you delete older backups or purchase additional storage. This is why many people choose to delete old or unnecessary iCloud backups.

There are several reasons you might want to delete specific iCloud backups. You may have upgraded to a new device and no longer need the backup from your old phone. Perhaps you've accumulated multiple backups over time and want to clear space for current backups. Some users delete backups before selling or giving away an old device to ensure their data isn't associated with that device anymore. Additionally, if you're experiencing backup errors or issues, deleting and recreating a backup can sometimes resolve the problem.

Understanding what happens when you delete an iCloud backup is important before taking action. When you delete a backup, only that specific backup file is removed from iCloud—your current device data remains unchanged and unaffected. Your photos, messages, and other information stay on your device itself. The backup deletion only removes the saved copy in iCloud storage.

Practical Takeaway: Identify which device backups you want to keep and which ones you can delete. Make a list of your devices and when their backups were created to decide which backups are no longer needed.

Deleting iCloud Backups From an iPhone or iPad

Removing iCloud backups from an iPhone or iPad is straightforward and can be completed in just a few minutes through the device's Settings app. The process involves navigating to your iCloud settings, finding the backup section, and selecting which backup you want to remove.

Start by opening the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. At the top of the Settings screen, tap your name or Apple ID. This takes you to your personal Apple ID account settings. From there, look for the option labeled "iCloud" and tap it. You'll see various iCloud services listed, including Mail, Photos, Contacts, and more. At the bottom of this list, you'll find "Manage Storage" or "Storage." Tap this option.

In the Storage section, you'll see how much iCloud storage you're using and a breakdown showing which items are taking up the most space. You'll notice a list of backups for your various devices. Each backup shows the device name (like "Sarah's iPhone" or "John's iPad"), the backup date, and the size of the backup in gigabytes. Tap on the backup you want to delete.

A detail screen will appear showing information about that specific backup, including when it was last created and what data it contains. At the bottom of this screen, you'll find a button labeled "Delete Backup" in red text. Tap this button to remove the backup. You'll see a confirmation message asking if you really want to delete the backup. Confirm your choice by tapping "Delete" again.

The backup will be removed from iCloud storage within a few moments. You'll be returned to the Storage screen, and you should notice your total storage usage has decreased. If you had multiple backups to delete, repeat this process for each one you want to remove.

Practical Takeaway: Delete old device backups one at a time and check your remaining storage after each deletion to track how much space you're freeing up.

Deleting iCloud Backups From a Mac Computer

If you back up your Mac to iCloud, you can delete those backups using your Mac's System Settings or by accessing iCloud settings from another Apple device. The process is similar to deleting backups from an iPhone or iPad but uses your computer's settings menu instead.

On a Mac running macOS Ventura or newer, click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen, then select "System Settings." In System Settings, look for "iCloud" in the sidebar on the left. Click it to open iCloud settings. You may need to sign in with your Apple ID if you're not already logged in. Once you're in the iCloud settings, look for an option related to storage or backups. Click "Manage" next to your storage information.

You'll see a list of all your device backups, including any Mac backups. Find the Mac backup you want to delete and click on it. Details about the backup will appear, showing the backup date and size. Look for a "Delete Backup" button and click it. Confirm your choice when prompted. The backup will be removed from iCloud.

If you're using an older version of macOS, the steps might be slightly different. You can also delete Mac backups through iCloud settings on an iPhone or iPad using the steps described in the previous section—simply look for your Mac's name in the backup list instead of an iPhone or iPad name.

Another option is to use iCloud.com on any web browser. Sign in with your Apple ID at iCloud.com, click the Account Settings icon (usually in the top-right corner), select "iCloud," then navigate to "Manage Storage" or "Device Backups." From there, you can select and delete any of your backups, including Mac backups.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your Mac's backup size before deleting it so you can verify that space has been freed up after deletion.

Managing Multiple Device Backups and Storage Space

If you own several Apple devices—multiple iPhones, iPads, or Macs—you might accumulate several backups in iCloud. Each device backup takes up storage space, and with the standard 5GB free limit, you may find yourself running out of room quickly. Understanding how to manage multiple backups helps you make informed decisions about which ones to keep and which to delete.

Start by reviewing all your device backups and noting which devices they belong to. Visit your iCloud storage settings and look at the complete list of backups. You might notice backups from devices you no longer own—perhaps an old iPhone you upgraded from years ago, or a tablet you sold. These old backups serve no purpose and are safe to delete. You should also note the dates of your backups. If you have multiple backups from the same device, older backups are generally safe to remove since your most recent backup contains the latest version of your data.

Consider which devices you actively use and which are inactive. If you have an iPad you rarely use, you may not need to keep its backup in iCloud. Similarly, if you've replaced a device with a newer model, the old device's backup can typically be deleted. However, if you think you might need to restore data from an old backup in the future, keep at least one backup from that device.

Another strategy involves prioritizing backups by device importance. Your primary iPhone probably contains your most critical information, so keeping its backup is important. Secondary devices like older iPads might be lower priority. Review the backup sizes as well—some backups may be unexpectedly large. If a backup is particularly large, consider whether you really need it, especially if it's from an older device.

If you find yourself constantly running out of iCloud storage even after deleting old backups, you have the option to purchase additional storage directly from Apple. Apple offers storage plans starting at 50GB per month for a small fee, with larger options available. However, deleting unnecessary backups is usually the first step to consider before paying for more storage.

Practical Takeaway: Create a spreadsheet listing all your device backups, their dates, sizes, and whether you still need them. This makes decision-making easier and keeps you organized.

What Happens After You Delete an iCloud Backup

Understanding what occurs after you delete an iCloud backup helps you avoid confusion or worry about losing important information. Deleting an iCloud backup is permanent—once it's gone, you cannot recover it. However, this action only affects the backup copy stored in iCloud, not your actual device data.
