How to Use Your Walmart Gift Card

Understanding Walmart Gift Cards and How They Work

Walmart gift cards are prepaid cards that you can use to purchase items at Walmart stores or on Walmart.com. When you receive or buy a Walmart gift card, it contains a specific dollar amount that's loaded onto the card. Think of it like having cash already set aside for shopping at Walmart. The card itself is a physical plastic card with a unique card number and PIN, or you might receive a digital gift card sent via email.

Gift cards come in different forms. Physical cards are available at checkout counters, customer service desks, and various retail locations that sell Walmart gift cards. Digital Walmart gift cards can be purchased online and delivered to an email address within minutes. Both types work the same way—they hold money that you can spend on merchandise.

Walmart gift cards never expire, according to Walmart's gift card policy. This means you can use the card whenever you want, whether that's immediately after receiving it or months later. The balance remains on the card until you spend it. This is different from some other retail gift cards that may have expiration dates or fees.

The value of a Walmart gift card is determined when you purchase it or receive it as a gift. Gift cards typically come in denominations ranging from $15 to $500, though you can purchase amounts between these values through various channels. Physical cards purchased at a register or Walmart.com can be customized to nearly any amount you choose.

Practical Takeaway: Before using your gift card, locate the card number and PIN on the back or front of your card. Write these down or take a photo and store it in a safe place. This information is essential for making purchases, whether in-store or online.

Using Your Gift Card for In-Store Purchases

Shopping with your Walmart gift card in a physical store is straightforward. When you're ready to check out, bring your items to any register. Let the cashier know you're paying with a Walmart gift card. Hand them the card, and they'll scan it or enter the number into their register system. The purchase amount will be deducted from your gift card balance.

If your gift card balance is less than the total cost of your purchase, you have options. You can pay the remaining balance using another payment method like a credit card, debit card, or cash. Walmart allows you to combine your gift card with other payment methods on the same transaction. For example, if your gift card has $25 remaining and your total is $50, you could use the gift card for $25 and pay the other $25 with a credit card.

You can check your gift card balance before you shop or at any point during your visit. Ask a customer service associate at the front of the store to scan your card and tell you the remaining balance. Many Walmart stores have balance-checking kiosks near the customer service desk where you can look up your balance yourself. This prevents surprises at checkout and helps you plan which items to purchase.

Your Walmart gift card works on all merchandise available in regular Walmart stores, including groceries, clothing, electronics, home goods, and pharmacy items. There are very few restrictions on what you can buy. You cannot use a Walmart gift card to purchase alcohol in some states due to local laws, and you cannot use it at gas stations or Walmart neighborhood markets in certain cases, though this varies by location. If you're unsure about a specific product, ask a cashier before checkout.

Practical Takeaway: Always check your gift card balance before shopping to avoid an embarrassing moment at checkout. Keep your receipt after each purchase—it shows your remaining balance and provides a record of your transaction.

Making Online Purchases with Your Gift Card on Walmart.com

Using your Walmart gift card on Walmart.com is simple and convenient. Start by visiting Walmart.com and browsing for the items you want to purchase. Add items to your cart as you normally would. When you're ready to check out, you'll reach the payment page where you select how you want to pay for your order.

On the payment screen, look for the option to add a Walmart gift card. You'll need to enter your gift card number and PIN. If you have a physical card, this information is printed on the back. For digital gift cards, this information was included in the email confirmation you received. Enter these details accurately, as incorrect numbers will cause your payment to be declined.

If your gift card balance covers the entire order, your transaction will process, and you'll receive an order confirmation email with your receipt and tracking information. However, if your gift card doesn't have enough balance to cover the full purchase, you can add a second payment method. Walmart.com allows you to split your payment between a gift card and another card or payment option. The gift card balance will be used first, and the remaining amount will be charged to your other payment method.

Digital gift cards can sometimes take a few minutes to activate after purchase, so if you just bought a digital card to use immediately, wait a few minutes before attempting your purchase. When you complete an online purchase with a gift card, you can track your order through your Walmart.com account. You'll receive shipping updates via email, and you can return items following Walmart's standard return policy.

Practical Takeaway: When shopping online, double-check the gift card number you're entering to avoid typos that would cause your payment to fail. Take note of the exact remaining balance, and consider adding a backup payment method to ensure your order goes through smoothly.

Checking Your Balance and Keeping Track of Your Card

Knowing how much money remains on your Walmart gift card is important for budgeting your purchases. There are several ways to check your balance at any time. The most direct method is to visit a Walmart store and ask a customer service representative to scan your card and tell you the remaining amount. Many stores have self-service kiosks where you can swipe your card and see the balance displayed on screen without needing to speak to an associate.

Online, you can check your gift card balance on Walmart.com. Visit the gift card section of the website and look for the "Check Balance" or "View Balance" option. Enter your gift card number and PIN, and the website will display your remaining balance. This method works for both physical and digital gift cards. You can check your balance as many times as you want—there's no limit to how often you can look up this information.

If you have a digital gift card, the confirmation email you received when you purchased it should include your card number and PIN. Save this email or store the information in your phone's notes app or a password manager. This makes it easy to reference the number when you shop online or need to check your balance later. Some people also take screenshots of their digital gift card for quick reference.

For physical gift cards, write the card number and PIN on the back of the card or in a notebook. Keep this card in a safe place, just like you would a credit card. If you lose a physical gift card, you should report it to Walmart as soon as possible. While Walmart cannot always replace a lost or stolen gift card, reporting it prevents someone else from using the remaining balance. Digital gift cards are safer in this regard since they're not physical objects that can be lost or stolen.

Practical Takeaway: Create a system for tracking your gift card balance. Whether you check it before each shopping trip or keep a record in your phone, staying informed about your remaining balance prevents you from arriving at checkout with insufficient funds.

Understanding Restrictions and Limitations

While Walmart gift cards work for most purchases, there are some items and situations where they cannot be used or have limitations. Walmart gift cards cannot be used to purchase other gift cards. This policy applies to Walmart gift cards, cards from other retailers, and general purpose cards. You also cannot use a Walmart gift card to purchase money orders, lottery tickets, or gaming cards in most locations.

In some states, Walmart gift cards may not be usable for purchasing alcohol or tobacco products due to state regulations. If you try to buy these items with your gift card, the cashier will inform you of the restriction. You would need to use a different payment method for these products. Additionally, some Walmart locations have different rules for what can be purchased with gift cards, so it's worth asking if you're uncertain about a specific item.

Walmart gift cards are only valid at Walmart stores and Walmart.com. They cannot be used at Sam's Club, Walmart gas stations, or
