Learn How to Type a Degree Symbol Anywhere

Understanding Degree Symbols and Their Uses

A degree symbol (°) is a small circle that appears above and to the right of a number or letter. It has several important uses in writing and communication. The most common use is to show temperature measurements, whether in Celsius or Fahrenheit. For example, water freezes at 32°F or 0°C. Scientists and engineers also use the degree symbol to measure angles and arcs in geometry and mathematics. A right angle measures 90°, and a full circle contains 360°. In addition, the degree symbol appears in geographic coordinates to show latitude and longitude positions on Earth.

Beyond science and mathematics, the degree symbol has cultural and symbolic meanings. Some people use it in creative writing, social media posts, and informal communication. Understanding where and how to use this symbol correctly helps your writing appear more professional and accurate. The symbol is small but meaningful—it communicates precision and attention to detail in technical or academic contexts.

Different devices and programs handle the degree symbol in different ways. Whether you work on a computer, tablet, or smartphone, methods for typing this symbol vary significantly. Some platforms have built-in features that recognize when you need a degree symbol and suggest it automatically. Others require you to know specific keyboard combinations or menu navigation. Learning multiple methods gives you flexibility when working across different devices and applications.

Practical takeaway: Recognize that the degree symbol serves specific purposes in temperature readings, angle measurements, and geographic coordinates. Knowing when to use it correctly strengthens your technical and academic writing.

Typing Degree Symbols on Windows Computers

Windows computers offer several straightforward methods for typing a degree symbol. The most reliable approach uses the numeric keypad on the right side of your keyboard. To use this method, hold down the Alt key and type 0176 on the numeric keypad. Release the Alt key, and the degree symbol appears. This method works in most Windows applications, including Microsoft Word, email programs, web browsers, and text editors. The numeric keypad is essential for this technique—using the number keys across the top of the keyboard will not produce the same result.

If your keyboard does not have a numeric keypad, such as on laptops or compact keyboards, you can enable a virtual numeric keypad. On laptops, Num Lock activates an alternate number system built into the letter keys. Typically, you hold Alt and Fn together, then press the keys marked with numbers. Some laptops have a dedicated Num Lock key, while others require you to press a specific key combination. Check your laptop's manual or manufacturer's website to find the exact method for your model.

Another option for Windows users involves the Character Map application, which is built into the system. Open the Start menu, search for "Character Map," and launch the application. In the Character Map window, search for or scroll to find the degree symbol. Once you find it, double-click the symbol to add it to the clipboard. You can then paste it anywhere using Ctrl+V. This method works on any Windows device and requires no keyboard shortcuts to memorize.

Microsoft Word offers an additional method through the Insert menu. Click Insert, then select Symbol. A dialog box appears showing various symbols. You can search for "degree" or scroll through the list. Click the degree symbol and select Insert to add it to your document. This approach is particularly helpful when you need multiple degree symbols or prefer using the mouse rather than keyboard commands.

Practical takeaway: Windows users should try the Alt+0176 numeric keypad method first, as it is fastest and works across all applications. Keep Character Map bookmarked as a backup for devices without numeric keypads.

Typing Degree Symbols on Mac Computers

Mac computers make typing the degree symbol simple through a keyboard shortcut. Hold Shift and Option (Alt), then press the letter K. Release all keys, and the degree symbol appears immediately. This shortcut works consistently across Mac applications including Apple Mail, Pages, Microsoft Word for Mac, web browsers, and text editors. The combination is easy to remember once you practice it a few times. Unlike Windows, which requires numeric keypads, this method works on all Mac keyboards, including laptop keyboards and wireless keyboards.

If you forget the keyboard shortcut, Mac offers the Character Viewer as an alternative. Press Control, Command, and Space bar simultaneously to open the Character Viewer window. Type "degree" in the search box to find the symbol quickly. You can then double-click the degree symbol to insert it at your cursor location. The Character Viewer also shows you the keyboard shortcut for any symbol you search for, which helps you learn new shortcuts over time.

Mac users who frequently type degree symbols may want to add the symbol to their custom keyboard shortcuts. Open System Preferences and navigate to Keyboard, then Text. Click the plus (+) button to create a new shortcut. Type the degree symbol in the "Replace" field and create an easy-to-remember abbreviation in the "With" field, such as "deg" or "°". After saving, whenever you type your abbreviation and press Space, Mac automatically replaces it with the degree symbol. This method is especially useful for writers, scientists, and engineers who use the symbol regularly.

For Mac users who use multiple languages or have international keyboards enabled, the method for typing the degree symbol may vary. Check your current keyboard layout by clicking the language icon in the menu bar. The standard Shift+Option+K shortcut applies to US English and most other English keyboard layouts. Other languages may have different key combinations, which are typically documented in the keyboard layout preferences.

Practical takeaway: Mac users should memorize Shift+Option+K as the primary method. For frequent use, create a text replacement shortcut to type the degree symbol even faster.

Typing Degree Symbols on Mobile Devices

Smartphones and tablets use different methods than computers because they have on-screen keyboards rather than physical keyboards. On iPhones and iPads running iOS, the degree symbol is hidden on the main keyboard. Press and hold the zero (0) key on the number pad until a menu appears showing several symbol options. The degree symbol is typically the first option in the menu. Tap it to insert the degree symbol at your cursor position. This method works in all iOS applications, including email, text messages, social media apps, and notes.

Android phones approach this differently because different manufacturers customize their keyboards. On most Android devices, you access additional symbols by tapping the symbols key (often labeled ?123 or .?!). Once you reach the symbols screen, look for the degree symbol, which may be visible directly or may require tapping a second symbols menu (often labeled =\<). Some Android keyboards allow you to search for symbols by typing their name. If you cannot find the degree symbol through these methods, long-press the zero key just as you would on iOS—many Android keyboards also use this approach.

Samsung devices, which use their own keyboard system, often feature the degree symbol on the secondary symbols screen. Tap the symbols key, then look at the character grid. The degree symbol may appear directly on the keyboard, or you may need to tap the right arrow to access additional symbol pages. On Samsung phones, you can also enable symbol prediction, which learns your typing patterns and suggests the degree symbol when you type related words like "temperature" or "angle".

Google's Gboard keyboard, available on most Android devices, includes a search feature that lets you find any symbol. Tap the search icon (magnifying glass) within the keyboard app and type "degree." The degree symbol appears as the top result. Tapping it inserts the symbol into your text. This method is faster than scrolling through symbol menus, especially when using the keyboard frequently.

Practical takeaway: iPhone and iPad users should memorize the long-press zero key technique. Android users should locate their keyboard's symbols menu or use the search feature if available. Adjust these methods based on your specific phone model and keyboard app.

Using Degree Symbols in Web Browsers and Online Forms

When typing in web browsers, email services, and online forms, you can use the same keyboard shortcuts as your device. A Windows user can still use Alt+0176, while Mac users can use Shift+Option+K. Mobile users can long-press the zero key or access the symbols menu just as they would in any other app. Most web-based text editors, including Google Docs, Gmail, and Microsoft 365 applications, recognize these standard keyboard shortcuts and work seamlessly with them.
