Your Guide to Driver's Licenses and Vehicle Registration in Hurst Texas

Understanding Driver's License Types in Texas

Texas offers several types of driver's licenses, each designed for different age groups and driving circumstances. The most common type is the Class C driver's license, which allows you to operate passenger cars, light trucks, and motorcycles under 50 cubic centimeters. If you plan to drive a motorcycle larger than 50cc, you'll need to add an endorsement to your license.

Texas also issues Instruction Permits (also called learner's permits) for people learning to drive. These permits come with restrictions—typically, you must be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and sitting in the front seat next to you. Instruction Permits are valid for one year and can be renewed if needed.

If you're between 16 and 18 years old, you may receive a Provisional License. This license comes with specific rules, such as restrictions on passengers under 21 and limitations on driving between midnight and 5 a.m. (unless you're driving to work, school, or a religious event). The restriction on passengers drops after you've held your Provisional License for six months without violations.

Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) are separate and required if you operate commercial vehicles or trucks over a certain weight. There are also Occupational Licenses, which allow people with suspended licenses to drive for specific purposes like work or medical appointments. Additionally, Texas recognizes Enhanced Driver's Licenses, which contain extra security features and can be used for travel to certain countries.

Practical Takeaway: Before visiting the Texas Department of Public Safety office in Hurst, determine which type of license you need based on your age and the vehicles you plan to drive. This will help you gather the correct documents and know what to expect during your visit.

Documents You'll Need to Bring

Preparing the right documents before visiting a Texas Department of Public Safety office will make your visit faster and smoother. Texas requires proof of identity, residency, and Social Security number for all driver's license transactions. Understanding which documents count for each category is important because not all documents are treated the same.

For proof of identity, you can bring a U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate, a U.S. military ID card, or certain immigration documents if you're not a U.S. citizen. A passport is often the easiest option because it covers both identity and citizenship in one document. If you're using a birth certificate, it must be an official certified copy—hospital records or copies don't count.

Proof of residency in Texas requires a recent document showing your current address. Acceptable documents include a utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, homeowners insurance policy, or a rental agreement. The document must be dated within the last 30 days for most types. If you've recently moved to Hurst, a lease agreement or utility bill in your name is your best option. Apartment residents can use lease documents even if they don't pay utilities directly.

You'll also need to provide your Social Security number. While you don't need to bring a Social Security card, it can help if you have one. If you don't have a Social Security number, you may be able to get a driver's license with a Texas ID number instead, but you should contact the DPS office in advance to understand your options.

For minors under 18, parents or guardians must provide consent documents. Some documents, like adoption records or guardianship papers, may be required if applicable to your situation. If you're renewing a license, you may not need as many documents—bring your current license and follow the specific requirements for your renewal type.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of documents before your visit: identity proof, residency proof, and your Social Security number information. Call the Hurst DPS office at (817) 849-3722 ahead of time if you have questions about specific documents, as staff can clarify what will be accepted for your particular situation.

The Driver's License Test Process in Hurst

Texas requires first-time driver's license holders to pass both a written knowledge test and a driving skills test. Understanding what each test covers will help you prepare. The written test, called the General Knowledge Test, consists of 30 multiple-choice questions about Texas traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. You must answer at least 21 questions correctly to pass. The test covers topics like right-of-way rules, speed limits, parking, and how to respond to traffic signals and signs.

Before taking the written test, you'll have an opportunity to study the Texas Driver's Handbook, which is free and available online at the Texas Department of Public Safety website or at any DPS office. The handbook contains all the information you need to pass the test. Many people read through it at least once and take practice tests online to build confidence. The actual test is administered on a computer at the DPS office, and results are provided immediately.

The driving skills test, also called the driving exam or road test, happens after you pass the written test. During this test, a DPS examiner rides with you in your own vehicle (or a vehicle provided by a driving school) and observes your driving for approximately 20 minutes. The examiner evaluates how well you handle the vehicle, follow traffic laws, and respond to different driving situations. You'll be tested on skills like parallel parking, lane changes, turns, stopping, and driving at various speeds.

Common reasons people fail the driving test include failing to signal turns or lane changes, not checking mirrors and blind spots, exceeding speed limits, improper positioning in lanes, and not stopping completely at stop signs. If you don't pass on your first attempt, you can retake it. Many people pass on their second or third try after getting additional practice.

If you completed driver's education through an approved school, you may be waived from the written test. Approved driver's education programs are available through many high schools in Hurst and through private driving schools. The program typically involves classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor.

Practical Takeaway: Study the Texas Driver's Handbook thoroughly and take practice tests before your written exam. For the driving test, get plenty of real-world driving practice in various conditions—residential areas, highways, and busy intersections—before your scheduled exam date.

Vehicle Registration Basics and Requirements

Every vehicle driven on Texas roads must be registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle registration serves as proof that your vehicle has been properly documented and that you have the legal right to operate it. Registration lasts for one or two years, depending on the type of vehicle and registration you choose. Most passenger vehicles are registered for one year, meaning you'll need to renew annually on or before your registration expiration date.

To register a vehicle in Texas, you need proof of ownership, proof of identity, and proof of residency in Texas. The proof of ownership is typically the vehicle's title document, which shows who owns the vehicle. If you purchased the vehicle from a dealer, the dealer usually handles initial registration, but you must complete paperwork to transfer the title to your name. If you purchased a used vehicle from a private seller, you'll need the signed title from the seller.

New vehicles purchased from Texas dealers come with temporary paper registration that's valid for about 30 days. During this time, you should visit a DPS office or an authorized agent to complete permanent registration. The vehicle will be inspected to match the vehicle identification number (VIN) and other details to the paperwork. This inspection is quick and ensures the information is correct.

Vehicle registration fees in Texas vary based on the vehicle's weight and type. A passenger car typically costs between $50 and $100 for a one-year registration, though luxury or high-value vehicles may cost more. Trucks and commercial vehicles have different fee structures based on their weight. Texas also offers optional services like specialty license plates that support different causes—these may have different fees.

You'll receive registration stickers (tabs) that must be displayed on your vehicle's license plate. The sticker shows the expiration month and year. Additionally, you'll receive a registration certificate, which is a paper document that shows your vehicle's information and registration status. Keep this certificate in your vehicle at all times, as law enforcement may ask to see it during a traffic stop.

If you need to update your vehicle registration information—for example, if you changed your address—you can make changes at a DPS office or through an authorized agent in Hurst. Address changes are important because the DPS will mail your renewal notice to the
